Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde was a nineteenth century Irish poet and playwright.
He excelled as a Classicist at Trinity College Dublin and Oxford University, before moving to London and circulating in the most learned and fashionable circles.
Fascinated by the emerging philosophy of Aestheticism, he published a book of poems, lectured across North America on the ‘English Renaissance in Art,’ and worked as a journalist.
Oscar Wilde became one of the best-known personalities of his day, wowing the fashionable London circles with his flamboyant dress, biting wit, and impressive conversational skill.
In 1890, Wilde drew on his interest in art and the themes of decadence, duplicity, and beauty to produce his only novel: The Picture of Dorian Gray.
He would find his true calling, however, as a playwright. Wilde wrote four society comedies in the 1890s, including The Importance of Being Earnest.
We’ve collected the best and wittiest Oscar Wilde quotes on love, life, education, and more.
