We tend to think about grief in relation to the loss of a person, but in reality grief is a wide topic that covers many different kinds of losses and emotions. Grief quotes are a great way to help you process what you’re feeling, or express condolences to others.

Even though it turns our lives upside down, grief is a normal and natural emotional response to loss or change.

When someone we love dies, something that is familiar and normal to us ends. We must adapt to the new, unwanted reality of life without them.

We feel sadness, anger, despair, or perhaps even a sense of relief that they are no longer suffering. We feel those same feelings and experience a different kind of grief when a relationship or job ends.

All kinds of grief are valid and take time to work through.

Whether your grief is fresh and raw or old and still tender, we hope that this collection of grief quotes helps you to translate your feelings into words.

Neil Gaiman

Accepting death doesn’t mean you won’t be devastated when someone you love dies. It means you will be able to focus on your grief, unburdened by bigger existential questions like, “Why do people die?” and “Why is this happening to me?” Death isn’t happening to you. Death is happening to us all.

The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same nor would you want to.

Elizabeth Gilbert

It’s like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly—that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp.

The worst type of crying wasn’t the kind everyone could see–the wailing on street corners, the tearing at clothes. No, the worst kind happened when your soul wept and no matter what you did, there was no way to comfort it.

Katie McGarry

Grief is a most peculiar thing; we’re so helpless in the face of it. It’s like a window that will simply open of its own accord. The room grows cold, and we can do nothing but shiver. But it opens a little less each time, and a little less; and one day we wonder what has become of it.

Whoever said that loss gets easier with time was a liar. Here’s what really happens: The spaces between the times you miss them grow longer. Then, when you do remember to miss them again, it’s still with a stabbing pain to the heart. And you have guilt. Guilt because it’s been too long since you missed them last.

Kristen O’Donnell Tubb

If you cannot hold me in your arms, then hold my memory in high regard. And if I cannot be in your life, then at least let me live in your heart.

When someone you love dies, and you’re not expecting it, you don’t lose her all at once; you lose her in pieces over a long time—the way the mail stops coming, and her scent fades from the pillows and even from the clothes in her closet and drawers. Gradually, you accumulate the parts of her that are gone. Just when the day comes—when there’s a particular missing part that overwhelms you with the feeling that she’s gone, forever—there comes another day, and another specifically missing part.
