Maya Angelou was an American poet, civil rights activist, and prolific writer.
Across the span of 50 years, she is credited with 7 autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, plays, movies, and television shows. Before her death in 2014, she received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.
Her most famous autobiography, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, focuses on her life and experiences before the age of 17. Angelou lived a difficult, if fascinating, early life working as a sex worker, nightclub dancer, fry cook, actor, and journalist.
She was named the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in 1982, and became friends with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X through her involvement in the civil rights movement.
In 1993, Maya Angelou recited her poem “On the Pulse of Morning” at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton.
